This is a step in the right direction as far as graphics are concerned from Amatic. The reels are transparent, with what looks like the banners and weapons of a huge Roman Legion in silhouette in the background. The setup is a 5 reel, 3 row video slot with 10 win-lines. There are two reasons that this game is worth a look. First you can win some big money in the standard game by lining up the Roman legionnaire symbols. Second, the free spins bonus game includes sticky wilds – which can lead to some big wins, especially for those last few spins.
You’ll hear a little trumpet fanfare tune when you start this game up, though the sounds after that (when you hit winning combinations) are shorter and more computerized. While the frame and background of the slot is impressive, there are a lot of playing card symbols involved. Banners, a Roman on horseback and the eagle motif in gold are nicely produced. Overall this slot has a better quality feel to it than many other Amatic titles. Animations are basic, with flashes and zooms the main effects in play.
You will not be able to adjust the 10 win lines which cross from the left to right on this slot. What you can do is change your bet size within a wide range. You can spin for just 10 coins (10c) up to 1000 coins per spin ($10). You can also set auto-start, which keeps spinning the reels until you either run out of money or click the button a second time. After every win you’ll be offered the chance to gamble on the flip of a playing card – either red, black or suits are all options.
The biggest single prize comes from lining up 5 of the Roman Legionnaire symbols. This will get you 100x your total bet. 4 are worth 25x, 3 are worth 5x your bet and even 2 get you 1x you total bet amount back. This is also the wild symbol, which will substitute for everything except the horse-riding scatter symbol to complete winning combinations. There is no multiplier for wins involving wilds in this game.
Next comes the banner, with is worth 50x your bet for 5 and pays down to 2 – followed by the eagle and the gold coins – which are worth a maximum of 25x for 5. Playing cards are in the supporting role, making up those smaller (though still incrementally important) wins.
The Roman on a horse is the scatter symbol. You need 3 of these anywhere on the reels to trigger the free spins bonus game.
You will get 10 free spins to start off with, though it is possible to trigger 10 more with 3+ scatters at any point during play.The main attraction with this bonus game is that the wild symbols (Legionnaires) are sticky. Every time you get one, it will zoom out from the head-shot and show a standing legionnaire, which will then remain in place for the rest of your spins.
If you get a few of these on a win-line early on, you can find yourself hitting multiple wins on every subsequent spin. Sometimes you will find only 1 or 2 appear, though this will balance out over time.
There are a couple of contradictions in this game for me – though I did enjoy it overall. First the graphics are far better produced than on many other Amatic titles. The contradiction here is that this is somewhat spoilt by the over-use of playing card symbols. The game-play is solid – as you might expect from Amatic. The bonus game is the highlight, though other than some sticky wild symbols, this is very close to the main game.
